Inclement Weather & Safety

Inclement Weather

In case of inclement weather, check our homepage or call the AFTA office. Updates are also posted on Facebook and Instagram.

The Academy for the Arts follows the inclement weather policy of First Baptist Church of Asheville (not necessarily the school systems). When bad weather develops during the day, AFTA reserves the right to cancel classes for the remainder of the day. Please call the AFTA office for cancellation notices or to determine whether a decision to close the building was made during the day.

In the event we need to close the building due to weather-related issues, students will have a “Virtual Day.” For those for whom virtual lessons are not possible, we will make those lessons up in person as soon as it is convenient for both teacher and student.

Safety

Your safety is our priority. Please adhere to all policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment.

  • Families are welcome in the AFTA lounge. No child under the age of 12 (whether student or sibling) may be left without adult supervision in the Academy.

  • Students over the age of 12 may be dropped off and picked up in the AFTA family lounge by an adult or authorized sibling over the age of 16.

  • Students are expected to enter the Academy door only, arrive on time for lessons, and check-in with the receptionist for each lesson. For security reasons, if a student is late to a lesson for any reason without notification, AFTA personnel may call the parents to verify the child’s whereabouts.

  • Parents and children should wait quietly in the AFTA family lounge.

  • AFTA reserves the right to use photos and videos taken in classes and at AFTA events for promotional materials unless otherwise denied in writing upon registration.

  • AFTA has completed a background and security check on all faculty.

  • Our classrooms have all been cleaned and disinfected, and will be attended to throughout the day.

  • No food or drink is allowed in the building. Water bottles are allowed with a secure top.

  • We encourage preventative actions from students at home: wash hands with soap and water, clean and disinfect surfaces, cover coughs/sneezes, and if students/anyone in the family is sick, STAY HOME
